Drug and alcohol addiction impacts millions of individuals and their families in the United States in any given year, resulting in devastating consequences on health, wellbeing, and loss of life.
The state of Massachusetts is home to some of the highest rates of substance abuse in the country. The abuse of opioids like fentanyl and the illegal opiate, heroin, is particularly prevalent, with life-threatening consequences for thousands of people nationwide each year.
In response to the U.S. opioid crisis and substance abuse at large, treatment centers like Swift River persist in their mission to provide life-changing treatment services for people struggling with addiction.
Located in Western Massachusetts, Swift River is a licensed addiction treatment center that offers a three-stage continuum of care for patients overcoming drug and alcohol addiction.
The first stage of this process is dedicated to medical stabilization and detox – an essential service for people overcoming drug or alcohol dependency.
The second stage of treatment at Swift River is our residential treatment program, which integrates both traditional and holistic treatment modalities for a whole-person approach to addiction recovery.
What Is Residential Treatment?
Residential treatment is a type of treatment program that involves living on-site within a rehab center to participate in a formal schedule of individual and group-based treatment services.
At Swift River, each patient’s residential program schedule is individually tailored in order to best suit their needs and goals for addiction treatment.
This individualized approach allows for each person entering our program to receive personalized treatment that recognizes the unique aspects of their experience with addiction and any previous treatment history.

Swift River Residential Rehab Program: At A Glance
Swift River recognizes that addiction is more than just a physical health problem. Addiction can affect every aspect of a person’s life, from mental and emotional health, to relationships with those closest to us.
In recognition of this, Swift River’s residential treatment program offers a full schedule of groups, activities, and therapies designed to help patients process the effects of their substance abuse and learn healthy coping strategies for managing triggers and substance cravings.
For many people, drugs and alcohol serve as a way to cope with emotional difficulties, symptoms of mental illness, or trauma.
People can also become susceptible to addiction as a result of environmental, biological, and genetic factors.
The program schedule offered at Swift River is designed to address these potential roots and causes, based on each patient’s unique life circumstances.
Components of our residential treatment program include:
- around-the-clock supervision and support
- medical supervision
- individual therapy
- cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- dialectical behavioral therapy DBT)
- motivational interviewing (MI)
- eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
- group therapy
- medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
- family therapy
- expressive therapies (e.g. creative writing, art)
- outdoor-based treatment
- individual case management
Program schedules for each patient are developed based on information we gather through each patient’s initial assessment.
Therefore, the type of treatment a person receives may differ depending on their drug of use, duration of substance abuse, and other personal factors.
Medication-Assisted Treatment At Swift River
Swift River offers an innovative approach to addiction treatment that integrates both traditional and holistic services. This includes the use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which is considered the most effective treatment for opioid abuse and addiction.
This type of treatment utilizes certain medications that have been identified as useful for easing drug cravings, withdrawal, and preventing relapse. This offers the safest solution for opioid addiction among populations requiring specialized care, such as patients who are pregnant.
In addition to medication, the second component of MAT is behavioral therapy. Together, these components offer a full mind-and-body approach to the physical, emotional, and mental sides of addiction.
Medications offered as part of our MAT services at Swift River:
- buprenorphine (Suboxone)
- naltrexone (Vivitrol)
- *methadone (coming soon in January 2020)
- lorazepam (Ativan, for alcohol withdrawal)
Residential Mental Health Services
Compared to the general population, people with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at increased risk for addiction.
People who abuse drugs and alcohol are also more likely to develop symptoms of mental illness, which may later be diagnosed as a mental health disorder independent of substance abuse.
Within our residential treatment program, Swift River offers effective therapies and psychiatric services capable of addressing co-occurring mental health problems.
By treating substance abuse and mental illness together, patients can learn helpful coping strategies for managing symptoms and triggers for a greater chance at achieving success in their recovery.
Outdoor-Based Activities And Therapies
Swift River is proud to be home to a beautiful campus spanning over 500 acres of land, including several hiking trails, ponds, and creeks.
Choosing this natural and peaceful environment for our treatment campus was no simple coincidence. Rather, it is one of the greatest benefits we offer as an ideal site for experiential and therapeutic opportunities integrated within our addiction programs.
Within our residential program, patients have the opportunity to engage in activities such as:
- ropes course
- cooperative games
Benefits Of Residential Addiction Treatment
Recovering from addiction is not an overnight process. Addressing the root causes of your substance abuse, and identifying your needs for staying sober, can take time.
Through our residential program, Swift River offers a structured and supportive environment for patients to develop a strong network of support in the early stages of sobriety.
This involves spending individual and group sessions with our dedicated team of medical and behavioral specialists, who are trained to help patients identify opportunities for personal growth.
Participating in a residential program also offers a valuable opportunity for peer support by connecting patients with others who can relate to their experiences.
This can be helpful for people who may have had a difficult time maintaining social connections in the depths of their addiction.
This support from peers in recovery and our staff can carry a person through the early stages of recovery, but more importantly, later on in life beyond Swift River’s campus.
