Study Halls

Homework is a vital link in the continuity of learning, giving students the chance to reinforce previously covered material. Homework also serves to allow students to work independently, expanding their knowledge and developing their study- and time-management skills. Although there is variability from subject to subject, each class at ASR assumes about 30 minutes of homework per class section, or an average of about two and a half hours total for each school day.

Each student at ASR carries an academic load of 5 periods of class plus 1 period of study hall each day. These study halls are proctored by an Academic Mentor, who is available for guidance and support. Evening study halls occur throughout the week, 7 pm-9 pm Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Subject and Skill Tutorials

Each week, a block of time is set aside to provide additional academic support for students. Students can use this tutorial time (currently Wednesday mornings) in a variety of ways:

  • To receive extra 1:1 help from teachers
  • To receive small group help from teachers
  • To meet with their academic advisors
  • To get peer tutoring help
  • To work on group projects with peers
  • To work independently on schoolwork or sustained silent reading

Academic Mentoring and Study Skills Training

Although all of our students are bright and capable, some require some extra coaching in the areas of organization and study skills. Our Academic Mentor caries a caseload of students whom he monitors on a weekly basis to provide this support. The Academic Mentor also offers a Study Skills class, based on the Landmark College curriculum.

Additional Tutoring

Occasionally students need extra tutoring to navigate through an especially tough class or subject area. The Academic Office can coordinate such tutoring by helping parents connect with qualified, appropriate private tutors.
